Drop in GMAT score from 680 to 610 & profile evaluation.

by deepu.85.rao Fri Dec 31, 2010 6:27 am

My profile is as follows:

GMAT : 1st attempt : 680 (Q50,V31) AWA 4.0
2nd attempt : 610 (Q49,V24).

GPA: 79% out of scale of 100 .[ that works out to close to 3.8 to 3.9 ]

Work Ex :3.5 years (as of now) in IT products.
-was a module lead for almost a year.

Post MBA goals : technology consulting / IT strategy.

Extra Curriculars:
1.Worked with for NGOs as part of CSR activity .
- Have received a certificate from Regional General Manager (India ) for the same.
2.Active member of Run Club:Various marathons + corporate relay.
3.Campus Relations Manager Role (from past one year) @ my company.
-worked on curriculum at my alma mater as part of this.
-led a team to select interns at the company
-judge for technical case study at my alma mater.
4. One patent disclosure which I submitted is published at ip.com + 3 more under various stages of evaluation by IP dept.
5.Couple of paper presentation durin' college days.

I'm planning to apply for Round 2 - Georgia Tech , McCombs, NUS,Nanyang & Kelley (probably)

1. Are these schools with in my reach ?Any other recos for tech related schools.?
I've heard from aspirants that appin' in R2 + score <700 for Indians = ding.

2. My second attempt resulted in drop of 70 points & my AWA score looks slightly problemtaic. Should I need to mention these in my optional essay ?

3. Do you suggest trying for other school ( from 20 to 35 rankings) in R3 ? or better try for R1 for next year for the same ones?

4. Should I need to retake my GMAT if I'm targettin' since there is a drop in the score (assumin' my target is top 20 to top 30 US bschools ?Any advice is most welcome
Sorry for the extremely lengthy post.

Hi Deepu,

As hard as it is sometimes, try not to think of admissions as a formula, as it is unlikely the school's see it as that.

1) These schools seem like a good mix for you -- Georgia Tech should be competitive and I would label McCombs a near-reach. As I mentioned above, business schools evaluate you based on what you present them with, rather than pigeonholing you into an existing profile.

2) Schools traditionally only look at your highest overall score, so I wouldn't worry about the drop. Unless you have a strong explanation that you think addresses your AWA score, I would not draw extra attention to it.

3) I recommend waiting for next year's R1, as R3 admissions rate tend to be lower and you don't mention a compelling reason why you had to wait until R3.

4) As I said above the drop in score shouldn't be an issue.

Good luck!
