this is practice question from manhattan verbal strategy guide chapter advanced SC ...chapter 11 practice problem 16 .


Dr Kings " letters from the birmingham jail" is cc a condemning of racial injustice and a calling for nonviolent resistance to that injustice .

this sentence is corrected as follows:

......is a condemnation of racial injustice and a call for nonviolent resistance to that injustice.

my question is why do we need to change the two gerunds "condemning " and "calling " if they are already parallel . i could not get your explanation given in the book.

is it because D r Kings " letters from the birmingham jail" is itself a noun phrase.

Hi,

I think this is just a simple case of preference. It says in the last page of chapter 11 that Action nouns are preferred over Complex gerunds. The question is probably just meant for us to practice that rule

How can a 'Letter' be an Action Noun Phrase?? Action Nouns are usually derived from Verbs and they should refer to action. I dont see any action here? Can some one please explain?

I think you have misinterpreted the post.

I was referring to the "condemnation of..." and the "call for..", not the word "letter"

I had this problem too, but I found the correct explanation in the sentence correction book page 215.
The original words are:" if an appropriate action noun for a particular verb already exists inEnglish, then avoid creating a complexgerund phrase. Instead, user the pre-existing action noun."
I hope this will solve your problem.
