Doubt in RC Verbal foundations book

by vishalc581 Sun Oct 04, 2015 9:51 am

Hi,

After facing problems in solving RC questions I started with Manhattan's GMAT Verbal foundation 5th edition.

I have doubts in some questions in passages from chapter-11:

Passage 1: Padua's Supernova Sighting

3. The author mentions which of the following as a result of the supernova of 1604?
(A) The supernova created and dispersed the heavy elements out of which the
Earth and everything on it is made.
(B) Galileo explained the origin of the supernova.
(C) The public was interested in hearing lectures about the phenomenon.
(D) Galileo's lectures were opposed by philosophers.
(E) Those who thought the supernova was "vapour" were proved wrong.

Issue: In the above question why not E. Passage says "(some posited that perhaps it was
merely "vapour near the Earth"), but seriously undermined the views of many philosophers
that the heavens were unchangeable."

Passage 3: Cargo Cults

8. The passage suggests that resident of Tanna concluded that they were the "rightful
owners" (lines 28-29) of the "cargo" because
(A) they found stories of the goods' actual origins to be incredible
(B) they believed all possessions were created by deities
(C) they believed they were owed a debt by their ancestors
(D) Allied forces had given them the cargo
(E) guns and airplanes were unknown to them prior to World War II

Issue: In the above I wasn't able to understanding the wording of the passage for this choice when I was doing this question.

I am facing difficulty in understanding some words in passage like provenance, posited and due to this I mark lots of answers as wrong especially main point question where we can choose correct option on the basis of initial wording of choices. Please suggest me something to improve this area.

Also, I tried to make a layout of the passage but in long passages like above one "Cargo cults" I am forced to look more on the passage where the question refers to and it takes lot of time. I have noticed that I am unable to use my notes while solving questions (they are not detailed).

In the short passages with 2 para I am easily able to work without making notes.
Is it fine if I read passage once and after that I prepare a layout containing short notes of passage (this means I am reading a passage twice before taking up any question) or should I prepare notes when I am reading passage first time.

I also face difficulty in reading biology passages.

Can you please help me.

Thanks& Regards,
Vishal

Please place each question in a separate topic, and make sure to include the text of the passage as well as the answer choices.
