D in Calc II

by m.shamesaldain Tue Nov 23, 2010 6:16 am

Hi,

I am wondering whether taking an online calculus class will lend me credibility when applying to B-schools given that I got a D in calculus II. I got a B in calculus I and was a business major at a tech school (hence the calc requirements). I am currently getting 46-48 on the quant practive tests.

If you think it will help, does it matter where I do the class? I am consdiering UC Berkeleys online calc class but have no idea how the program is viewed.

Thanks :)

Hi there,

Thanks for writing in. A "D" on a transcript is definitely something you'll want to address. I think you have the right idea of taking an extra Calculus course (I don't know anything about Berkeley's online courses, but it sounds reputable in my opinion). You may want to write a short optional essay that states you understand this weakness in your transcript and took this course to proactively address the weakness, and hopefully you can share a good grade in that essay as well.

Good luck!

Are there any particular courses in ur knowledge that are known to satisfy MBA requirements of calculus? I understand that any of these courses aimed at making up for poor grades need to be for undergraduate credit but do they also need to be assessed as transferable to the desired B-School?

I found these courses at UC Berkeley, UCLA and UC Irvine that are offered for-credit(undergraduate-level) online .

1.UC Berkeley-http://extension.berkeley.edu/catalog/course597.html

2.UCLA- https://www.uclaextension.edu/pages/Cou ... ?Reg=W2849

3. UC I

Will be very grateful if you could advise me on which one I should do.

Hi Suhail,

I can say with a fair degree of certainty that any of these courses would satisfy the requirements of MBA programs, but I think your best bet would be to call the ad coms directly for the schools that you are interested in and ask them directly. I know many folks that have take UC Berkeley extension courses pre-MBA, but I do think any of these would be fine. Still, double check to be sure! Sorry not to be more helpful here.
