Consortium Thoughts?

by Guest Thu Oct 02, 2008 6:19 pm

What are you thoughts on applying through the Consortium's common application? Do you think it helps? hurts? or none of the above? I am interested in applying to NYU and Tuck anyways and noticed they were both part of the consortium schools. I was actually planning on applying through the normal application process until a friend mentioned that I take a look.

Stats:

- Hispanic American
- 750 GMAT
- 3.0 GPA from Harvard/ Yale/ Princeton
- 2 year as IB analyst at boutique firm

I'm curious for your thoughts since I recall you saying being an underrepresented minority does not really help.

Thanks.

It will help IF you are not just a minority by blood, but by culture (i.e. you have a history of active involvement with Hispanic/Latino cultural/social/political organizations). If you don't, then your background won't be a disadvantage, but it won't make or break your candidacy either.

Ultimately, it still comes down to your individual candidacy - your scores (GMAT/GPA), pedigree (schools and employers) and anything else notable about you outside of work/school (and obviously how well you execute the applications as well).

Given your individual candidacy, you are a strong applicant irrespective of your ethnicity. I think you have a pretty good shot at NYU and Tuck.

Consortium Thoughts

by Guest Fri Oct 03, 2008 11:09 am

Thanks Alex. I would say I am not highly invovled, but moderately involved given a tough work schedule. I am involved in some mentorship programs through my collge that focus on helping hispanic americans learn about business and particularly careers in finance.

I guess if it can't hurt then it would save me time and money to apply via the Consortium application.

Yes, by all means go ahead and apply via the Consortium. It may not help you that much, but it certainly won't hurt you.
