confused abt workexp, colleges, parttime/fulltime -Need Help

by SL Mon Sep 22, 2008 2:23 am

About Me -
MTech IIT in 1998
10 yrs in IT - worked with big companies - including GE, WellPoint, Kaiser
Currently working as a Program Manager handling multimillion dollar projects.

I am giving GMAT on Sep25. Aiming to score 700+

DreamCollege : Stanford - fulltime MBA
2nd preference : UCLA - parttime MBA

What are my chances for Stanford? I read on few posts that 10yrs in IT is too much for First Tier business schools such as Stanford, Harvard. Is that true?
I am ready to live job, relocate - if I can get into Stanford. Is that a crazy thought?
(BTW.. I am treating Stanford, Harvard as first tier
and UCLA, Berkeley, USC as second tier... I am assuming thats correct)

Would you advise me instead to focus on UCLA parttime?

I am not clear whether doing an MBA from Stanford Vs UCLA will make any difference? (in terms of salary, better jobs, opportunities etc)
Can you share your thoughts?

Anything is possible, but your chances of getting into Stanford are pretty slim. They're focusing on younger applicants, and Indian IT types are virtually shut out of HBS and Stanford.

Warton's MBA in Healthcare Management

by SL Tue Sep 23, 2008 1:41 am

Thanks Alex.

I just found out that Warton has MBA in Healthcare Management.
Considering my 6+ yrs in healthcare, do I have a chance (taking into account other negative factors in my profile .. such as 10+ yrs of work exp etc)?

Also, Is this a good specialty .. in terms of opportunities after MBA? Or I should avoid healthcare mgmt and go for more general specializations?

Thx

Real Q

by SL Tue Sep 23, 2008 2:40 am

Hi Alex. I think, I know my real question now..

About Me -
MTech IIT in 1998
10 yrs in IT - worked with big companies - including GE, WellPoint, Kaiser
6+ years in Healhcare industry
Currently working as a Program Manager handling multimillion dollar projects.
Was involved in starting a non-profit org in india. Am involved with religious/social activities since then.

I was planning to apply for
Stanford(fulltime)
UCLA (parttime)
UCLA (fulltime)
Warton (fulltime - Healthcare Mgmt)
Berkeley (parttime)

Can you advise me on my chances?
If chances are less in few (eg say in Stanford.. what are the other options?) ie which colleges I should focus on?
When you refer to Top10, Top20.. which ranking do you follow? I see different ranking on different websites

Thanks for your time.
