Competition for those seeking general management positions?

by fontejello Mon Jul 14, 2008 12:26 pm

What I hope to gain from B-school is a chance to switch from accounting/finance into a more general management career path, with either a small company or I guess as a mid-level manager at a larger company. I'm not sure about the industry, but I think I can figure that part out in school.

Now we all know the "elite" jobs are in banking or consulting, and that is why competition is fierce at B-schools. They offer the chance to move into those fields. Would it be to my benefit to center my application (essays and interview) on this decision that I'd like to move away from finance and into general management? or will I still be grouped with people who want to work at Goldman or McKinsey?

You're not "grouped" by career goals.

What an adcom is looking for is a sense of focus -- they want to know that you have a decent idea of what you want, and how to get it. It's not used to benchmark you vs. other applicants.

What is used to benchmark you is your past -- your demographics, academics, and career to date.
