Combined score GMAT?

by hien.b.dang Tue Dec 04, 2012 9:36 pm

Hello Manhattan GMAT Instructor,

I am totally new to the Manhattan GMAT forum so hopefully my question is clear enough :)!

I have taken GMAT 3 times. First time, 690 with 48Q and 36V, second time, 650 with 50Q and only 28V, third time 700 with 51Q and 33V. So definitely my Math score improves throughout and consistently but my Verbal struggles a little bit. I am wondering if the admission looks at all 3 scores and takes the highest of each Verbal and Math?

One more question, with this score of 700 and not so much of experiences (I graduated in May and have been working for several months at a small firm), do I have a chance for top 10 or 20 B-schools?

Thank you so much,
Haley

Hi Haley,

Please disregard the response you received earlier. This was from a spammer, and does not represent mbaMission's opinions or expertise. We are working to remove her from this board.

To answer your question, the admissions committee do not look at all your tests and pick the highest math and verbal scores, unfortunately :( They look at the scores for the test that you report. So, in your case, you would probably report your highest overall score (the 700), and they'll see a high quant and low verbal score.

With that said, they do weigh the quant more than the verbal, so that is good. Also, you can always let them know in an optional statement that you have scored higher on verbal on past tests, but that you chose to report your highest overall score.

Other than that, you should just make sure your application is well put together and that your essays are strong and grammatically correct. That should help show that you have a strong handle on verbal/communication.

With such little experience, it's probably too early to apply to a top program. You want to get at least three years under your belt and, more importantly, demonstrate a very strong leadership capacity (both professionally and in community/extracurricular activities). You also want to show strong business acumen and team capability, so try to take advantage of those opportunities at your job (or perhaps move to an organization that affords those opportunities).

Best of luck,
Mili
