COMBINATORICS PROBLEM

by alexisvargas85 Thu May 23, 2013 1:16 pm

Hello, in the Manhattan Number properties strategy guide, 5th ed. I have a question on pag 56. the solution of the problem number 6, they just divide 5! by 4!, I did 5! divide by 4! multiply by 1!, since I though there will be 1 identical member for choosing the 4 toppings. Could you please explain why it is just 5!/4!?

Thank you,

Alexis

Please read (and follow!) the forum guidelines before posting.

This folder is only for general strategy questions, not content or specific test problems. Check out the content / problem folders and post in the relevant folder depending upon the source of the problem you want to post (and make sure to follow the rules about banned sources). If you are a course student, you can also ask about other problems or issues before or after class or during section.

A quick note thought: 1! equals 1. 1 times anything equals itself. So the book solutions just leave out any instances of 1! (and you don't need to write them down yourself), because they never change the answer. :)
