Columbia 2nd Round - bigger drop than other schools?

by Anon Tue Dec 04, 2007 6:27 pm

Hi,

I have heard from one fairly reliable source (a consultant with experience in admissions) that Columbia fills a large % of its class in the Early Decision round and that it is much harder in Round 2. This person said that, compared to other schools generally, Columbia has a significant drop in admissions odds in Round 2 vs Round 1.

To what extent is this true? And also, do people who apply shortly after the scholarship deadline of Jan 9th stand a much worse chance than those who apply before?

Thanks!

Yes, but I think the differences are overstated.

It certainly is easier to get into Columbia through the ED round. They do admit a greater %, but not to the point where the Regular Decision round is impossible. Far from it. It's certainly harder, but if you have a competitive profile, you should still have a decent shot.

From a practical standpoint, if you missed the ED round, best to submit your app as soon as you can - shoot for the end-January at the latest, and ideally in early January.
