College Senior? Should I apply

by Benovi Thu Jul 16, 2009 12:34 am

Hello,
I am a college senior majoring in fine art, and am currently studying to for the GMAT. My biggest concern is that my work experience is not related to business, and not extensive enough. I will graduate spring 2010 and hope to go to a top 10 school fall 2010. Before attending undergraduate school I served as a volunteer missionary for my church for 2 years in Albania. The work was very intensive and I held leadership roles. Does this type count as work experience? As a college senior what should my resume/application look like, and what top schools are not as concerned with business work experience? I am not necessarily set on applying this year, but I am worried that with an art degree it will be hard to get a job. Assuming that my essays and recommendations are good what's my outlook?

GPA: 3.7
Work: 2 years Albania volunteer
Speak albanian fluently
Avid member of climbing community
Accomplishments: Art, started own business.
I don't know how detailed you need it, but just so you get the general idea.

Benovi,

To provide an assessment of your profile, I need to know more about your impact while you completed missionary work as well as your career goals. Some schools (like Harvard/Stanford) take volunteer experiences and internships into account when they evaluate applicants without traditional work experience. These candidates typically have outstanding academic, leadership, community and internship related accomplishments. You don't need a business degree to go to a top business school, but you do need to possess a habit of leadership and have a vision for how you want your career to develop. It might be worthwhile for you to work for a couple of years if you haven't finalized your goals. Please let me know if you have any additional questions about your profile.

Best,
Monica Okrah
