Chances of getting into part time programs for these schools

by vinotai Tue Sep 29, 2009 3:55 am

Hi all,

I'm new here and I had just finished taking my one and only GMAT today. The score was 640 (quant 48, and verbal 29). I was not ever great at verbal, but 29 is a record low. Of nearly 10 practice tests I took, my lowest for verbal was 34.

Anyway, back to the question. I am hoping to get into a part-time program for USC or UCLA. What chances do I have with these schools? How about UC Berkeley?

My profiles are as follows.
- 29 years old
- Double Bachelors in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering
- 3.4 cumulative GPA
- 4 years of work experience (2.5 years at Raytheon as a Systems Engineer, and roughly 1.5 years as a Senior Consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton, which I am currently employed)
- Led a requirements focus team of a multi-billion dollar satellite project while working at Booz Allen Hamilton

Any help or insight is greatly appreciated. I was hoping to get at least a 650, and if lucky break a 700, but I guess it was not my day verbal-wise. I sincerely hope that 640 is not too far off the mark for the schools I am shooting for.

Thank you.

Hi and thank you for your inquiry.

The GMAT is disappointing I'm sure, and may impact your chances, but remember it is just one facet of the overall application. You don't provide a full set of information on your profile - e.g. community service - for me to give you a full assessment. You do seem to have some strong work experience though, showing leadership and solid results, and your grades are strong. Given that limited information, the GMAT may be a problem but your other elements seem strong enough that it may be worth applying anyway.

Best of luck,
