Can an antecedent be inside a possessive noun?

Hi,

I got a quick SC question about the usage of pronouns/antecedents.

Can an pronoun refer to an antecedent that is inside a possessive noun?

ie, It is my Dad's birthday today, I plan to spent time with him.

or Joan's cat is cool, and so is she.
