Brief assessment request

by mba.sidhant Sat Aug 14, 2010 10:28 am

Hi,

I took the GMAT on Aug 12 and scored a 760. I've sent my score to Harvard, Tuck, Wharton, Cornell and NUS (Singapore). I just wanted someone experienced to give me an unbiased opinion about my standing amongst the best applicants. Additionally, I have to thank MGMAT. Their 6 tests, question banks and archive of the weekly questions were brilliant. Thank you!

Here's a bit about my background:

Country: India
GMAT : 760 (99th percentile)
Verbal 42 (95th pc)
Quant 51 (98th pc)
AWA: Not yet received

Academic stream in school: Science
Bachelors degree: Journalism (Honors) - topped Delhi University

Internships: United Nations, WWF, India Post News Service

Work Experience: Google Inc. - 2 years (India)
Automation & Scalable Support Specialist
Account Planner
Product Feature Advisor

Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee - last 10 months
Risk Manager
Venue Operations Manager - Hockey World Cup
Venue Operations Manager - Commonwealth Games

I progressed into many important and enviable specialist roles at Google and also led a massive project targeting a user base of 200000+ who accounted to $2 bn of Google's annual revenue.

I've been promoted once at the Commonwealth Games (the second largest sporting event after the Olympics).

I need a completely unbiased specialist opinion. I've met a few counselors in India who've promised me the world. I somehow feel that most of the candidates at Harvard and Tuck would probably be as good and diverse as me or better.

Tuck is my first choice. I have always dreamt of Tuck. Their website is so welcoming for international students. Dream School!

Please advise! Thank you.

Hi mba.sidhant,

Thanks for writing in and sharing your details. And congratulations on an outstanding GMAT score.

You have some very unique experience in your profile that should help you stand out in the applicant pool. Your background in Journalism, success at Google and experience with the Commonwealth Games are definitely differentiating points. As you mention there will be other candidates with strong profiles, so you will need to ensure your essays emphasize your strengths, and tell a clear story as to why these schools are good fits for your interests and post-MBA goals.

Although you are focused on the top tier of U.S. schools, I believe you should be competitive. If Tuck is your first choice, then you can use your essays to explain why it is a great match for you.

Best of luck,

Daniel Richards
