Because of vs Due to . How to chose?

None of the typical physical properties, such as color, hardness, and melting point, of the element Astatine (At) is known because, due to its high radioactivity, it almost immediate decays into something else.

(A) known because, due to its high radioactivity, it almost immediately decays into something else

(B) known due to the fact that it decays almost immediately into something else because of its high radioactivity

(C) known if, because of its high radioactivity, it almost immediately decays into something else

(D) known: because of its high radioactivity, it almost immediately decays into something else

How do we choose between "Due to" or "Because of".
Due to= Modifies Noun and follow a touch rule
Because of = Modifies Verb or Action

In above sentence both Noun (Astatine) and Verb (Decays) exist, so how do we decide which should be modified and hence which option to go for ?
Due to or Because of?

Where did you get this rule from? In all honesty, I haven't seen a single official GMAT problem in which it's necessary to decide between 'due to' and 'because of'. A quick scan of the Official Guide 2018 reveals a few problems with this split (e.g. 690, 749). However, all the wrong answer choices have other significant issues.

If you wanted to apply that rule to answers D and E, then the words that come after 'due to' or 'because of' are the ones to look at. Answer D has 'due to NOUN' and answer E has 'because of NOUN'. However, for the reasons above, I consider this problem to be concerned with an issue not tested on the GMAT.
