barely finished mgmat, is real gmat as hard/long?

by gmattaker Fri Aug 29, 2008 12:35 am

I just took a CAT exam from manhattan gmat, and I was barely able to finish the quant section in time. I had to rush through each problem just to finish! Each problem took much longer for me to do than even the difficult problems from the official GMAT guides. Is the real GMAT going to be so time intensive?

Also there were so many questions about probability and combinations/permutations, and there were not very many such questions in the official guidebooks. Should I expect to see a lot of questions about probability and combinatorics on the real GMAT?

Thanks for the help.

what was your score?
our exams do have somewhat of a bias toward longer / more labor-intensive questions in quant, but only toward the 700ish end of the scale.
if you are a high scorer, then you can trust that the time pressure on the real test will be a bit more lax (but not THAT much more lax - don't forget to practice time management religiously).
if you are not scoring at least 650, then the difference in time management between our practice tests and the real test is essentially negligible.

how many prob/comb problems are you seeing per test?
historically, the real gmat has presented such problems at a rate of about 1-2 per quant section, although gmatfocus (the new product, which, one may assume, is at least partially reflective of the gmat's changing priorities) contains a substantially higher proportion of prob/comb problems than do the OG and the existing gmatprep databases.

so no, you won't see "a lot" of prob/comb questions.
