Bad score..Any chance getting into a school?

by cougarclawz Tue Jan 15, 2013 9:29 am

Hi,
I have written the GMAT twice already and ended up with bad scores both the times. 1st Attempt-490 (Q42,V17), 2nd Attempt-410 (Q28, V18). I was pretty shocked the second time. The quant questions seemed to be very easy the second time and I am not that bad at it. I felt it just wasnt my day. My verbal score pulled me down big time. Pretty confused as I have a good command of the language in general. I put a lot of pressure on myself the second time and it turned out to a disaster.
Now I am in a dilemma. I have 3.2 years of IT experience. I want to go for an MBA this year(2013 - September) as I do not want to wait another year. This is because my other plans are clashing. My question is that do I have a chance in any college which accepts GMAT score below 500? Are they AACSB accredited? I have good School, Pre University and undergraduate marks. I have other things good activities to add on in my application too. I would want to get into a B-school this year.
Other option is to write the GMAT in another month and half and send my scores to the colleges applied. I have the confidence that I can increase my scores to certain extent. I am not sure how much my chances would get affected if I send the new scores some ten/fifteen days after the application deadline is over.
Please advice whether I should give the GMAT again in Mid of February or wait for the next year which is actually late for me. If my third attempt is bad and I have to write it again later, How bad would that reflect on my application as its the fourth attempt.

Hello,

Sorry to hear about the bad luck with the GMAT. A score below a 500 is going to be tough to apply with. There are some programs that don't require GMAT that you could try for. Another alternative would be to try the GRE and look at programs that accept the GRE.

With all that said, if you are going to retake the GMAT, you should do so when it works for you. If you feel you can be prepared to retake it asap (and do significantly better!), go for it. If you feel that you'd need more time, then it sounds like an MBA may not be the right choice for you this year given your timing constraints.

Whether or not schools with consider scores submitted after the application deadline will vary from school to school. In most cases, they'll want a complete application package by the due date. If you ask them to consider a score you submit later, they will likely consider your application as part of the next round...

Good luck!
Mili
