B-School Profile

by apamit89 Sat Feb 23, 2013 11:16 pm

I had a 3.71 GPA in Business Information Technology from Virginia Tech (graduated in May 2011). Since that time, I've done consulting work for Deloitte over the past 1.5 years.

Given that I receive a GMAT score in the mean/median range for a top 15 program or so, am I well positioned to apply after 2 full years of work (matriculate at 3 years)? I'm wondering if this amount of experience is good enough to be accepted into a top program...I understand this questions is broad, but I want to get a sense of efficacy.

Thanks!

Hello!

The answer to your question is, "it depends." Some candidates get in with only 3 years work experience because they've achieved a lot/have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills in that time frame. Other candidates don't because they haven't. And, of course, work experience is not the only dimension - they take into account your extracurricular, community and academics. Looks like you're solid on the academic front - I can't speak to the other dimensions.

So, it's possible to get in if you're able to demonstrate strong leadership, teamwork, etc., but most candidates aren't able to show that with just two years of experience (that's what your application will be based on.... all the great stuff you do in the 3rd year won't be conveyed to the adcom!). I'd generally recommend waiting until you've had at least three years that you can write about... but, like I said - it depends! You might want to do a free consultation with a consultant on our team if you want to get a more personalized response and share more details.

Best,
Mili
