Re: Please Evaluate my Profile

Thank you for your inquiry.

As a young, female international candidate, you have a head-start as there are few female internationals relative to the pool. Your grades and GMAT are competitive for your high-end (Darden, UCLA, Duke) and above the averages for your others (McCombs, UIUC, Georgia Tech, Emory and Fisher). Hopefully, you can use your sharp trajectory to "woo" the admissions committees at the higher end. If you can reveal yourself as a manager and not a technician, you will be at a significant advantage. Further, you have the ability to diversify your story with your community work. In short, you should be quite competitive at your lower tier and thus, there is certainly every reason to apply to your higher-end. While Duke, Darden etc. are mild reaches, I think that you are on target in general.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald

Nishant, my apologies - I just noticed that my post was cut-off. I have attached the entire post below.

Nishant,

Thank you for your inquiry.

Generally, U.S. MBA programs are not that inclined to take students who have MBAs already. That written, you are the first candidate that I have come across who may not finish his "other" MBA and I am not sure how the AdCom will view this. On the one hand, there is the positive that you know you want to commit yourself to full-time study. On the other hand, there is the potential of the AdCom not being sympathetic to your predicament. In all likelihood, it will simply come down to the individual reading your application and whether he/she identifies with your story and can overlook this issue or even embrace it.

Other than that, you seem to be a real standout performer at work and it is great that you are winning community service awards - it adds a dimension to your application. In addition, your international experience and publications are assets as well. If someone can overcome your existing MBA, you should be a reasonable candidate for a top-15 school and even a top-10 program.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald

Saurabh,

Thank you for your inquiry.

Your question of whether or not to apply now is dependent on your ambitions. If you are targeting a top-20 program, from what you have provided, I think that you are facing a serious uphill battle year. You are an Indian technologist with no extras and a very low GMAT score. You have your work and that is it. If I were you and I were targeting top-programs, I would start to build my profile now for next year. You can take leadership roles in your community, advance personal goals, take a finance or accounting class, visit schools and improve your GMAT score - all facilitating a much stronger candidacy.

Sincerely,

Hello,

I am a 26 year old Canadian. I'm going to be applying to business school this year and was trying gauge my prospects at various top 10 US programs. My target schools are HBS, Wharton, Chicago, Kellogg (2 yr), and Tuck. Based on my profile, what do you think of my prospects? Should I consider expanding my set of target schools? Thanks for taking the time to review my profile!

Thank you for your inquiry. I think that you will be a very strong candidate for a top-program. You seem to have a consistent record of excellence - grades, athletics, extra-curriculars, five promotions, strong GMAT score and even international experience (Yes, Canada counts!). It seems to me that your only weakness is your current community involvements, which are not noted, but even then, considering your other strengths, you should have a good chance. I think HBS will be a reach, but the rest seem to be in range.

Hi Jeremy!

First, a brief background is in order. I'm an Indian male, 27 years of age. My career stats are as follows:

---
Undergraduate Academics:
- B.Tech. and M.Tech. in Computer Science (Dual Degree) from IIT Kharagpur (Among the top 5 universities in India)
- GPA: 7.86/10.0
- Final Year GPA: 8.98/10.0
- Won a best poster award at the IEEE International Conference on High Performance Computing, for my paper on a novel software watermarking technology I had developed
- Interned at the University of Glasgow, UK, after my junior year

GMAT:
760: Q-51, VA-41, AWA-5.0

Work Experience:
- 3 years of total work ex by the time I join an MBA programme
- 2006-07: 1 year with Oracle India, as part of their Enterprise Manager development team. During my time there, I also led a team of 3 to develop a proof-of-concept application that showcased next-generation Oracle Fusion middleware technology to corporate customers.
- 2007-08: Launched two technology startup ventures with colleagues from Oracle: the first one was related to social networking and was not successful commercially. The second startup deals with financial analytics, specifically automated financial news analysis for stocks in the S&P 500. I was responsible for technology development, interaction with potential investors, business model development as well as day-to-day operational issues.
- Currently engaged in talks with private parties interested in buying out the second startup.
- 2008-present: Working as a derivatives trader at a prop firm in Bangalore, trading S&P 500 & EuroStoxx 50 futures contracts. Rolling out my own custom quantitative trading strategies for machine-directed trading, based on the work I did with my second startup.

Professional Achievements:
- CFA Level III candidate
- Successfully cleared the FRM examination

Extra Curricular Achievements:
- Avid quizzer. Won quizzes at the national level, state level, and inter-college level.
- Captained my college quiz team on BBC's University Challenge TV Quiz.
- Founder-president of the Quiz Club at IIT.
- Active participation in debating and creative writing.
- Recreational interests in playing the guitar.
- Took an active role in student government as Undergraduate Representative, the 2nd highest student-held post in IIT.
- Editor of my college magazine.

Community Involvement:
- Taught children at a village school next to the IIT campus, as part of my activities with the National Service Scheme for youth.
- Led fundraising efforts in my office for an Indian NGO working with child rights

Goals:
- Short term: Joining a portfolio management firm and working my way up the corporate ladder
- Long term: I intend establishing my own independent capital management venture, focusing on India and other emerging markets where market inefficiencies still exist.
---

I *do* know that the above reads like a mini-resume :). Be that as it may, I took a call on providing as much information as is necessary in order for you to help me out in the best possible manner!

I am currently in the process of applying to UCLA Anderson, Chicago Booth, Columbia, Virginia Darden, UTexas McCombs, and CMU Tepper in the US, Rotman in Canada, and LBS in the UK. My choice of schools has been predicated on my interests in finance and entrepreneurship.

The issue is this: Though my profile seems decent enough (to my undeniably biased eyes), I cannot help but feel that my professional experience so far seems to radiate a certain sense of lack of direction. Having traversed the fields of IT, entrepreneurship and finance, I have discovered within myself a strong character trait of opportunity recognition and exploitation, and I feel that this is one factor that unites my experiences in all the sectors that I have worked in. Having said that, however, I'm not quite sure whether the B-schools I'm applying to will respond positively to this imagery.

What I'd like to know is:
- Having taken a look at my profile, do you think I stand a fair chance at gaining admission into the schools I have selected?
- Do you think I should be adding any school to the list above, or dropping any of the ones included?
- Will the fact that I'm 27 years of age, but have just about 3 years of experience, affect the application? (I started college late, and was in a 5-year program.)
- Will the uniting factor that I have identified above be strong enough to add a sense of direction to my overall application?

Hope I'm not bothering you with this inquiry. Your help would be much appreciated!

Thanks and regards,
Roger That

For those of us who're feeling paranoid

by Roger That Thu Nov 27, 2008 5:07 pm

Hi Jeremy!

I understand that you're really busy, and I appreciate the magnitude of the gesture that's implied in your free counseling sessions. But, like Anil in another thread, I've decided to feel a wee bit paranoid today, so here goes: Am I the one guy who's not going to get any attention from you?

:)

Your inputs would really help. At this stage, with a little over a month remaining for most of the Round 2 deadlines to pass, I'd really appreciate your insightful remarks and suggestions.

Thanks a lot in advance!!

Cheers,
Roger That

PS: In case you're busy, please drop a message saying so and I'll stop bothering you!

I appreciate the nudge. You were actually next on my hit list after Anil, but I ended up taking a few client calls. Anyway, thanks for your patience.

From what I read, I do think that you have a formidable candidacy. Your grades and GMAT are quite strong, your CFA levels are a positive, and your work with Oracle should help (strong American brand name), but it is your entrepreneurship that allows you to standout. Many people will go to b-school claiming that they want to start a firm at some point in the future; few will go having started a firm of their own, let alone two firms. If you can "sell" these stories, you should be in good shape. Your choice of schools is varied; still, I am not sure that I would rule any out. I think that Chicago and Columbia might be mild reaches, only because you are an international in a competitive year, expecting to enter the financial field (you might want to reconsider your goals). Your remaining schools -- Anderson, Darden, McCombs Tepper and Rotman - should certainly be in reach.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for the frank feedback! It was quite helpful.

Just one quick followup question: When you say that I should reconsider my goals, is this in light of the current global economic crisis, or is it a recommendation based upon my profile (which is admittedly slanted towards entrepreneurship)?

Thanks for everything!

Cheers,
Roger That.

Follow up to Roger That

by MBA Mission Sun Nov 30, 2008 5:25 pm

Roger That -

That's a good clarifying question and I should have been more clear. I meant it two-fold - first because of the current economic crisis, and secondly because you can make yourself stand out more by focusing on entrepreneurship, given your experience. Your entrepreneurial experience is far more unusual than your financial background, and therefore in the application you should emphasize your strengths and differences from other candidates. I hope that helps.

Jessica Shklar

Kellogg

by DAG Sat Dec 06, 2008 4:58 pm

Hello MBA Mission,

Thanks for your help on this forum. Wanted to provide some details on my candidacy to see if I have a shot.

1. Attended MIT (Top 5 school) with an engineering degree. Undergraduate GPA was somewhat on the low side: 3.8/5
2. Attended MIT for Master's (Top 5 School) with an engineering degree. Graduate GPA was much better: 4.8/5

4 years of stellar work experience in engineering and product management. I will have stellar recommendations.

GMAT: 730 (Q: 49, V: 41).

My questions:

1. I am looking to apply to a school like Kellogg or similar. Will my undergraduate GPA keep me from getting in, even though my college has a higher level of difficulty than most? That is my chief concern.
2. Should I also retake the GMAT to aim for a higher score? I definitely felt as though I left points on the table and didn't spend much time preparing.
3. Should I address my GPA in the optional essay?

Thanks in advance for any input you can provide. Your help is much appreciated.

Dear Dag,

In brief:

1. no
2. no
3. no

I think your worries are unfounded. With your GMAT and Master's level academic accomplishments, your undergraduate GPA will not hold you back. Spend your time focusing on telling your story in compelling, differentiating essays, and you have a very good shot at any top business school.

career essay

by guest Tue Dec 09, 2008 10:14 am

Jeremy,

I read your 12-page PDF on how to write a career goal essay. It was very helpful. I have somewhat of a unique situation because I have had more than one job since graduating from college 4 years ago. How do I address that in my essays? More specifically, 1) Do I need to give a "situation & impact" example for each job, 2) Do I have to provide reasons for why I left (I think most schools ask for this in the work history section anyway, right?), 3) What special touch do I need to add to address the moving around? I definitely want to show that it was a logical progression, one that was done in order to reach my short- and long-term goals.

Any thoughts, suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: career essay

Thanks for your inquiry, and I'm glad you found our document helpful.

Let me reassure you that B-schools have seen candidates with more than one job very very often - if anything it may be more common than a new college graduate staying at one job for four years! What's important in the career essay is to show a logical flow from one step to the next, either a promotion, a chance to expand your industry knowledge into a different market, a move to working internally for a client, etc. and to explain how the move made sense. If there is no immediately obvious logical flow, think creatively about why you chose to move. Were you originally exploring an intellectual path, only to realize that your creative side was withering? Did you fulfill a long-term passion to go into one field, but once in the field find that it wasn't right for you? As long as you put your moves in the context of your long term goal and tell a coherent story, you should be fine.

One caveat - you don't need to address every single work move in your essay. You have a resume and short answer section in almost all applications, where you can reveal your entire work history. In the career essay, you can just highlight the jobs - and more particularly the accomplishments -- that best fit with your overall narrative. Focus on marketing yourself via your achievements, using a few examples to illustrate your points.

Sincerely,
Jessica Shklar
