appropriate use of "each"

by parikj Mon Feb 04, 2013 12:48 pm

Hi!
I read the following sentence somewhere:
"Each of these horses cost five thousand rupees."
In my understanding, "each of" construction is considered a singular subject; so, the correct sentence should read, "each of these horses costs five thousand rupees."
Is this sentence incorrect, or has my understanding failed me?

P.S. besides helping with the question, please correct if you find any syntactic, stylistic, or grammatical error in the post.

Please read (and follow!) the forum guidelines before posting.

This folder is only for general strategy questions, not content or specific test problems. Check out the content / problem folders and post in the relevant folder depending upon the source of the problem you want to post (and make sure to follow the rules about banned sources). If you are a course student, you can also ask about other problems or issues before or after class or during section.

Your specific question would go in the General Verbal folder. Because it's a short question, I'll answer it this time. :) But next time I won't be so nice - I'll make you post in the correct folder! (And if you have any follow-up questions, post them in the correct folder.)

The subject "each" does mean "each ONE" - so, yes, you'd need to say "each of the horses costs five thousand rupees." Each one costs five thousand rupees.
