Applying for B-school as a Non-Traditional Applicant

by blawrence08 Mon Feb 07, 2011 5:46 pm

I left the workforce in July 2007 to stay home with my daughter. Prior to that, I was working as an investment banking analyst in an Canadian bank. How does top-tier business schools view applicants who have left the workforce for a number of years? How do I make my application stronger? I'm planning on applying this year.

Thanks,

Betty

Hi Betty,

Thanks for writing in. The challenge for you will be to clearly explain why you made the decision to leave the workforce, and more importantly why you are looking to return via an MBA program. This should be the focus of your "Essay 1" for each school. To make your application stronger -- are there any activities you participated in over the past 4 years that demonstrate community involvement or leadership? Those would be very helpful, even if outside the traditional workforce?

Good luck!
