Application Employment History

by Guest Tue Sep 16, 2008 11:06 am

The Wharton application the provide space for "Job Duties" (1650 word count) and Reason for Leaving; similarly, Harvard's application includes write-in areas for Responsibilites, Key Accomplishments, Most Significant Challenges, and Reason for Leaving (each with a 250 or so word count).

I would love to get some feedback on the nature and style of the answers that we should be providing here. Will bullet points of job tasks suffice? Or rather, does the 1650 word count of Wharton suggest that I should be answering in prose and perhaps addressing all of the Harvard-esque points (i.e. Nature of businesss, responsibilities, accomplishments, challenges). I don't want to get too wordy on the adcomm or be duplicative with the highlighted points on my resume but also don't want to undersell myself.

Also for the space regarding "Reason for Leaving" -- does "Finished two year analyst program" suffice or should I speak to the motivation for me not staying thereafter and why I chose to move on to a different employer.

Thanks!

Thank you for your inquiry.

There is always room for judgment with these questions. We find that most people just paste in their resume bullet points and that that is not a great way to get noticed. We advise our candidates to write brief responses in sentence form. Just because the school offers 1650 words, it does not mean that you are obliged to use them all. Most often, less is more - give them the information that they need in as concise a manner as possible.

As for your reasons for leaving, "Completed two year Analyst program" should suffice.
