Analysis of argument essay do we have to write against that?

by Raj Sun Apr 15, 2007 12:50 pm

I read Analysis of argument means critique the statement.

Does it means even we agree with the author's statement we have to oppose it? Can't we support it?

Such as no proper evidence? Analysis is not broad? opinion gathering from number of people is not enough?
furthern clarification is needed? All classes of people of people are not considered in the study? differect places like villages and cities are not considered in the study? Different seasons / cultures / countries are not considered in the study?

What other ways we can oppose?

Analysis of an Argument on the GMAT

by ayang Mon Apr 16, 2007 2:18 pm

The purpose of the Analysis of an Argument essay is ALWAYS to critique it. The Argument will be written so as to provide ample opportunity to deconstruct and criticize it. Thus, you should never support it, beyond saying that the author's argument has some merit but needs better evidence to support it, etc.

Note - this is very different from the Analysis of an Issue essay, when you can take either side.

Your concern will be mooted when you see the arguments themselves. Check out Chapter 10 of the Official Guide for sample arguments, and you'll see what I mean.
