Re: Although they are less obvious, termites does significantly

by JieZ636 Fri Jul 20, 2018 11:35 pm

Another question~
Example:
Jack loves Jenny more than Betty.
The sentence is ambiguous because it presents two meanings
1. Jack loves Jenny more than Jack loves Betty.
2. Jack loves Jenny more than Betty loves Jenny.
So what this sentence imply. The 1 or 2?
Jack loves Jenny more than Betty does.
If is 1, how can I express 2 using helping verb?
Thanks staff~ :D :D :D

I'm not sure I fully understand your question.
Jack loves Jenny more than Betty.
The sentence is ambiguous because it presents two meanings
1. Jack loves Jenny more than Jack loves Betty.
2. Jack loves Jenny more than Betty loves Jenny.

That's correct. To express the meaning of sentence 2, your rewriting is fine:
Jack loves Jenny more than Betty does.

However, to express the meaning of sentence 1, this would be possible:
Jack loves Jenny more than he does Betty.
