Although and -ing form

The Manhattan GMAT Sentence Correction book tells that

Although I take frequent naps, I study effectively

is correct, while

I study effectively although taking frequent naps

is wrong.

Why is the second sentence wrong ?

The word "although" is a subordinating conjunction and can't be used with a participle such as "taking". Here, you could use the word "despite" instead.

Despite is a preposition and can be followed by a noun or a present participle acting like a noun, right?

That is, indeed, correct. However, you don't need to be a grammar expert for this test; keep things practical.
