Does it matter if you take extra clases for a letter grade or with a pass/fail?

Alex,

My main question was whether I should take the class and try and get above a B or just take the course pass/fail and get a pass. In other words since the grade will not help my gpa does the ad com really care if you took it pass/fail

Take the course with the letter grade.

The courses are meant to show that you have the academic ability to get through b-school -- it's a substitute for what a low GPA cannot reliably show.

Courses with letter grades yield more info about whether you excelled ("A") or whether you were just adequate ("B") -- something that a pass/fail course cannot show.

So if you get below a B should you elect to not have the scores sent with your application?

This may sound rhetorical, but why would a grade lower than a "B" be any different than a low GPA? The whole point of doing extra courses is to provide additional info on your academic preparedness that a low GPA cannot.
