Alternative Transcript: Finance undergrad major

by MBApplicant Tue Jan 27, 2009 11:22 am

I am aiming to apply to an MBA program in Fall 2010. I have my undergrad in finance, but my gpa (2.85) is going to be a huge hurdle in the application process. I have been reading a lot about the alternative transcript, and will be taking a class this semester and in the summer. Since I was a finance major in college, I have taken courses in that field but my grades were not as great. Should I be creating my transcript by taking courses in Finance? For example- Will principles of finance will be a good option? Or should I be going for something more high level? And are two classes enough? I am really confused since I have read mixed reviews about the courses one should take to create such a transcript. Please help!

As mentioned before, take whichever classes that are quantitative/analytical in nature that best suit your schedule. Two is enough.

Adcoms just want to know that your low GPA was due to lack of effort, not lack of brains. Also, they're not looking for math geniuses, so as long as you take a college level class in calculus, stats, finance, accounting, algebra, etc. and doing reasonably well in them, that's more than enough. You don't need to take some hardcore theoretical physics class or anything. Again, an alternate transcript is just about damage control - showing that you're no dummy.
