Is 1/(a-b)<b-a?
1)a<b
2) 1 < la-bl

Is there a "picking numbers" approach to this question?
Or any other way to figuring this about besides algebraically?

try to investigate this situation.

- pick a few pairs of numbers ("a" and "b").
- find (a – b) and (b – a).
- it won't take you very long to figure out what the deal is.

once you realize how (a – b) and (b – a) are related, you'll realize that the whole 1/xxxxx thing is just a distraction.
