Age and community activities consideration for PT admission

by tgb3 Tue Apr 06, 2010 10:38 am

Hello and thanks in advance for your reply,

1. I am 36. By the time when my applications get ready it likely will be 37. The goal is to change a career. It is probably too late to apply for a full time to the top 10 BS (according to Alex Chu - "there's literally 1-5 individuals who are older than 35 at each school"). My question is whether it still makes sense to apply for a part time considering my age, particularly NYU Langone program?

2. Do part time programs consider applicants’ community activities for admission at the same level as full timers do?

3. My wife is a long time (1.5 years) full time (!) volunteer (Mon - Fri, 9 am - 5 pm). I'm a provider. Without my support she could not have volunteered. My full time job with long hours and often weekends at work does not leave any time to do community activities. Can my financial and moral contribution to my wife’s volunteering be considered by MBA Admission as my community activity?

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. I think that you are right to consider part time programs given that you are 36. If you want an MBA, which may be very helpful to you if you plan to make a major career change, part-time or executive MBA programs are the way to go. Compared to full-time MBA programs, part-time programs do not expect as much activity outside of work. It’s not as important in the application process. However, I don’t think that financial support for your wife’s volunteer work will be considered as community activity by the admissions committees. Community activities would really need to include active participation on your part. I hope that helps.

Sincerely,

Akiba,

Thanks very much for a very thorough and prompt response!

EMBA is not an option for me... Does that mean my age is not an obstacle AT ALL for applying to NYU Langone program? In other words, is it safe to say that it is not going to be more competitive?

Much appreciated , TB

Hello,

Sorry if I was unclear. I meant to indicate that a part time program like the Langone program is probably more appropriate for you at 36 than a full time MBA program. Langone is a good choice if it fits your needs. Best of luck!

Sincerely,
