Admissions question

by rarnanu Fri Sep 25, 2009 4:17 pm

I am Rar, I have over 10+ yrs experience working in IT field. I did my Bachelors and have a 3.1 GPA from India. I coudn't complete my course work for M.S and don't have a Master's degree. I want to go for EMBA in one of the top schools in US and wanted to see how this would effect my admission chances. I am preparing for MBA and hoping to get around 650/700.
Please let me know if my failure in the Masters sets me back in my career goal.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Rar -

From the limited information you provide I can't really assess your chances, but simply the lack of a Masters shouldn't set you back. I'm not sure if you didn't attempt it or if you started and failed it. The first scenario should not pose any problem. The second may require you to explain why you were unable to complete an academic program and give the admissions committee reassurance that you will do better this time.

Thanks for the quick response. I did complete the required course work for my Mastres but in order to get the degree I had to take a Comprehensive exam and I wasn't able to pass it due to some reasons though I have a GPA of 3.2. My feeling is that if I mention about the failure of my Masters degree it would really have a negative impact on my MBA decision process. Do I need to mention about it or not ?

Hi Rar -

If you don't mention the Masters, how will you explain what will appear as a gap in your resume? I think from an integrity stand point this is probably too big an experience to skip, so write the optional essay explaining that you did not complete the exam but did complete all the coursework and give the grades (if they were strong).

Good luck
