additional essay explanation

by mdlindsa Mon Oct 12, 2009 10:26 pm

I am not getting a recommendation from my current employer for my applications because I am not ready to inform her of my decision until I have been admitted and am sure I will be leaving. I will be up for a raise very soon as well, and I don't want my employer to look at me unfavorably because I would be leaving soon. If I don't get in to the schools that I want to, I would wait another year or two and reapply. I don't want my employer to be in the mindset that I won't be there for long.

Would it be necessary for me to write an additional statement explaining this to admissions, as they would wonder why my current boss did not write a recommendation? Or is it best to just leave it be?

Hi -

We would strongly recommend (and some schools specifically require) that you use the optional essay to tell the AdCom why your current supervisor is not writing your recommendation. Particularly in this economic environment, you will not be alone, so don't stress about it, just be clear and explain your situation in a concise manner.

I hope this helps.
