According to his own account, Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi

by vinodeswar Sun Jul 26, 2009 6:59 pm

According to his own account, Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor of the
Statue of Liberty, modeled the face of the statue like his mother’s and the body
like his wife’s.

(A) modeled the face of the statue like his mother’s and the body like his wife’s
(B) modeled the face of the statue after that of his mother and the body after that
of his wife
(C) modeled the face of the statue like his mother and the body like his wife
(D) made the face of the statue after his mother and the body after his wife
(E) made the face of the statue look like his mother and the body look like his
wife

Not sure what the correct answer is.

yes, "modeled after" is the correct idiom.

there's nothing unidiomatic in choice (e), though; you can also "make X look like Y", although that construction is a bit informal.

the problem with (e), though, is that the meaning doesn't make any sense. if you read that choice literally (which, as we know, is the only way you should ever read any of the choices), then it means that he made just the face of the statue look like his mother (i.e., his whole mother). same for the body and the wife (again, nonsense, unless his wife doesn't have a head).

Hi Ron,

Is option A eliminated only because of the wrong idiomatic usage?

Also, I chose A because I found modeled the face of X like Y more idiomatic than modeled the face of X after that of Y. Could you please suggest? Thanks a ton
