A very high math low verbal 640 and progress

by Scott.Wachs Wed May 19, 2010 5:49 pm

Hi there,
I just took the GMAT and scored a 640. 47 math 30 verbal. A few questions about my score. Is it better to have a strong math vs a strong verbal? How do admissions people view this score. This is also my 3rd attempt. I have gone from 530 42M 21V, 580 44M 27V to my score now. Does this progression also help?

My final question is based on the averages of GMAT based on the admissions of schools. I am going to apply to schools part time such as Pepperdine, Fordam, and Pace. My 640 is above their 10-90th percentile range. How much does that weigh in on their decision. My GPA is extremely low from 6 years ago but I am enrolled in 3 pre mba classes at ucla to boost my academic application. With 3 A's will this tip the scale in my favor?

Thanks for all your advice.

Hi -

Congrats on the improvement in your score!
Schools will look at your best score and the fact that you took the test more than once, with improvement, will signal to the admissions committee that you are committeed to going back to business school.

As it relates to you GPA - sounds like you are doing the right things in terms of building an alternative transcript. This is something we recommend to applicants who have a low GPA. Scoring As will definitely help mitigate your weak grades.

I hope this helps!
