700 (Q49,V36) - Female - Full Time - 5 yrs Work Experience

by sd Sat Oct 10, 2009 12:54 pm

Hello all,

I took the GMAT today and got a disappointing 700 (Q49, V36). Yes, it is definitely disappointing because I expected to score around atleast between 720-760 as indicated by all my GMAT Prep tests. I know I could have done definitely done more better in the verbal.

These are the schools I am aiming for (FULL TIME). (BTW if it matters at all I am a female.....)
1) Haas
2) Kellogg's
3) Booth
4) Duke, Faqua.

Please please advice me on what to do

1) What to do? Do I retake?

2) Do I stand any chance of getting into one of the schools, full time?

3) Even if I retake, I am so shattered and to be honest to take the test again, I doubt if I will cross the 740 barrier......atleast to me it appeared Quant has become increasingly tough and the GMAT PREP tests are no indication to the level of quant questions...so what if next time, my quant decreases a bit but I improve in verbal a bit, finally netting down to the same 700 or a bit better 720..

4) And I definitely do not want to wait until third round.....but if I had to retake I have to wait for 31 more days, which puts me at LOT of risk to be applying to the second round...

What do I do guys......please help...I need this forum more than ever.

Hi SD!

Befoe I start let me congratulate you on 700! It is a very good score. Infact, any score around 650 is very good, and any score around 700 is extreamly good.

If you want to retake the GMAT assuming that the B-schools will not consider your application looking at the score of GMAT, them you are absolutely wrong.

Note, the B-scools discloses the average scores of the applicants - NOT the highest or lowest ones. Thus, there are almost 50% of the applicants (assuming normal distribution) who were accepted had GMAT scores below the average.

B-scools look at the application as a total package. Your GPA, work experience, Essay, rec letters and GMAT. Thus, if you have two great recommendations and write a convincing essays, you are going to be one of the top priority for admission-assuming that the average score of the school you are applying is around 720.

From your writing, it appears (to me) that you are a non-native english speaker. If that is so, yes, you got a better chance of admission tot your dream school - as the almost all the schools have the spaces for the non-natives.

Also, being a girl (as you stated) it helps. If you look at the admitted students' stats, you will find that female students in a given MBA class is almost always below 50% - so, they are not repesented as they should be - meaning, you have a better chance.

Re. retaking the GMAT, I suggest that yes you can go for it. But before that PLEASE, belive in yourself and have confidence in you. If you don't believe in yourself then how do you expect taht the admission committee would do so? (Plz accept my apology if it hurts). But, from your writing it appeared that you are lacking confidence - as you stated that I am not sure about crossing 740 boundry.

Of course you can cross 740 and I am sure you WILL.

But I do not suggest that yiu retake assuming that you are not going to be considered with 700. You can retake for your personal satisfaction though!
