670 gmat score

by mgmat student Wed Jul 16, 2008 3:15 pm

I took the Manhattan Gmat course, and really found it helpful. On my practice tests, I routinetly scored in the high 60th percentile/low70th percentile in math, and I was consistently in the mid 80th percentile for verbal.

I finally took the Gmat last month, and scored 79th percentile on math, and 75th percentile on Verbal for a 660 and AWA score of 5.

I retook the exam yesterday, and scored a 48 (84th percentile) on math, and a 33 (69th percentile) on Verbal - for a total score of 670.

I am frustrated that my verbal has gone down. I reviewed the materials again before take 2, but am concerned that I am in a rut.

Do you think I need to take this exam again?

My background is as follows: BA in Econ from Columbia (3.7 GPA), two years at Ernst & Young (consulting- and I'm looking to make a switch and work for two more years before applying to bschool), and I'm pretty heavily involved with a nonproft org called HRC (Human Rights Campaign).

With this background and a 670 gmat score, do you think I am still competitive for schools such as Kellogg, London B School, or Insead? Or, do you think that a decent increase in my Verbal score will make a big difference in helping my chances?

Thanks for your help.

Thank you for your inquiry.

In what is shaping up as an ultra-competitive year, I don’t think that you NEED, to take the GMAt again, but I would suggest that if there is room for you to improve (and it seems that there is) it is advisable to take the test again. After all, you come from a fairly over-represented pool of consultants and there should be no shortage of comparable candidates with higher scores. Of course, scores aren’t everything (I hate to raise your anxiety level) and your involvement with HRC can help set you apart, but why not strive for every little advantage. All things being equal, assuming that you are not sacrificing the time necessary to put together a very strong application, I would consider giving it another shot. It certainly won’t hurt you...

Sincerely,
