660 gmat any chance in good mba school???

by sdhankar.chaudhary Fri Dec 03, 2010 7:51 pm

Hi,
I am currently living in US on a H4 visa for last 6 months.I wish to apply in a mba course.Kindly evaluate my profile.Below are my stats:

GMAT: 660 (Q-49,V-32)

Undergrad details:
Major : B.tech in Plastic Technology
GPA : 73 (on a 100 scale)

Work ex:
2 years (full time) as a software engineer in Accenture (US based MNC)

Target schools: 1) Arizona State Univ
2) Thunderbird
3) Babson college
4) Boston Univ
5)UC davis
6)Texas A&M

My first choice is ASU as it is closer to my place and would allow me to stay with my family. However, I am worried about my work experience ,which is only 2 years that too in IT.Although most of the univ I have chosen have an average gmat in my range.Kindly let me know about my chances in these universities.

Hi sdhankar,

Thanks for writing in. You are correct in that your areas of weakness are your limited work experience, and classification as an "IT" candidate. Still you can address these concerns in your essays -- why is NOW the right time for you to get an MBA, and how will your IT background plus an MBA help you achieve your goals. If you can clearly explain these decisions, I think the rest of your profile makes you competitive at ASU.

Best of luck!

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your reply :)
One thing I forgot to ask last time was my AWA score (5.5).I wanted to know how important is the AWA score in evaluating one's GMAT score. In my case, I have a lower score in verbal (32).So, would my AWA score make any diffrence to my application?
Also, I request you to throw some light on the other universities that I listed in my last mail and my chances in them as well.
Please give some information about MIS program in ASU and University of Arizona. How is this program different from an MBA?And is it better for me to apply in this program as well if I am unable to get admission in MBA?

Thanks,
Sakshi

Hi Sakshi,

AWA usually holds very little weight in the admissions decision; it could be used as a tiebreaker of sorts, but is unlikely to counterbalance a weaker verbal score.

In regards to the other schools, it's difficult for me to be an expert in all the programs out there, but my assessment is you're looking in the right range for your profile. I do know Babson has a heavy focus on entrepreneurship, so it may not be the fit you're looking for, and I recall UC-Davis having a median GMAT near 700, so that could be a bit tougher for your.

Unfortunately my area of focus is strictly MBA programs, so I can't provide any insights on MIS programs.

Good luck!
