# 10 Chapter 8 Algebra Study Guide Translation Issue

by JeffM187 Tue Sep 09, 2014 5:40 pm

Hi,

I am having trouble seeing how "The retailer has less than twice as many radios as clocks in inventory" translates to r<2c. Originally I translated it as 2r<c. Any clarification will be helpful. Thank you.

More complete answer when you post the question. But, for starters, think about cases in which there are "twice as many ____ as ____". Forget the "more than" for a sec. Think of some numbers that do this.

Hi, Thank you for your reply. Sorry, I will make sure to post the full question in the future.

"But, for starters, think about cases in which there are "twice as many ____ as ____". "

So, twice as many radios as clocks would mean there are 2 times the amount of radios as clocks. So if there are 10 radios, there will be 5 clocks. This translates to r=2c. Got you. That makes sense. Thanks for clarifying.

Yep. Now it's the same thing, but with "more than" (which has no effect on this aspect of the problem).

As Tim said, if you have other questions, please post the full text of the problem (and please do so on any future threads of yours, too). Thanks.
