Re: Q20 - Some critics of public funding

So at the end of the day, does this 'public support' that the scientist invokes actually matter, or is it just the logical framework that is set up? As far as I can understand from these posts, the argument would work just as well if it ended with 'If the critics were rights about this, then there w...

Re: Q7 - Instinct and Insects

Thanks. I guess my question is whether (B) can be properly inferred. Based on the stimulas we can infer that Insects --> ~Large enough brain and therefore Insects --> ~ Flexible thinkers. Answer (B) seems, at least to me, to require another assumption, namely that there is no way to think othe...

Re: Q7 - Instinct and Insects

But why do we have to take for granted that the only two possible behaviors are flexible and instinctual? Perhaps there is a third category that all organisms are capable of, which, if insects had, would make (B) incorrect.

Re: Q19

I think (B) has it a bit backwards, only because my sense is that the passage is organized in more of a Traditional hypothesis --> example --> counter example --> counter/alternative hypothesis --> Prediction based on assumption of counterhypothesis' validity. Its unclear, to me at least...

Re: Q5

Looks like we both just did the same test. This is obviously all about reading in context. The line goes 'Sembene's narratives take the form of initiatory journeys that bring about a basic change...." (B),(D), and (E) are easy enough to eliminate, so we are left with (A) and (C), which at first...

Re: Q11 - Spreading iron particles over

(E) is tricky, but should be among the first to be eliminated, for two reasons. (1) We have no information about a problem being exacerbated anywhere in the stimulas. But more importantly (2) the answer says 'we shouldn't do something to correct a problem that would make the problem itself worse.' I...

Re: Q18 - Book pulishers have traditionally published

If (D) were true, and authors were unwilling to publish, then why didn't this manifest earlier in time, when the stimulas says publishers would publish books of intrinsic value (thereby implying that authors were willing to have them published)? If back then publishers managed to find intrinsically ...

Re: Q21 - Several people came down

Yeah, I think the allergic reaction is out of the scope because the stimulas is concerned with bacteria. But perhaps even more basically, the stimulas concludes with the assertion that "health officials remained confident that contaminated seafood from this restaurant caused the cases of illnes...

Re: Q13 - Using rational argument in advertisement

you set up the first conditional of (E) backwards. The first line reads: "people never learn to program a computer by reading poorly written directions." We diagram this as: Poorly Written --> ~Learn to Program The second line "if people read well written directions, they will lear...

Re: Q18 - Moderate exercise lowers the risk

Hi - I'm actually confused on this one as well. As far as I understand it, if the conclusion itself admits that "if the data reported in a recent study are correct," then the conclusion will follow regardless of whether the data is correct or not. Let me try to explain. If the data IS corr...

Re: Q13

The point of paragraph 3 is that the tiger salamander larvae use kin recognition as well, but that it appears to be used for ANOTHER function. We also don't really hear about how the mechanism itself operates, other than it is used to identify kin. So (E) is incorrect mostly because it is claiming t...

Re: Q22 - The justification Helen offers

If we pretend for a second that this is an assumption question, and ask what assumption allows the conclusion (that it was wrong for mark to lie about his reason for missing the party) to flow logically, we would say something like 'Helen must be correct in her claim that "saying something that...

Re: Q4 - M: The Greek alphabet must

In the stimulus, M is basically saying 'some person invented the Greek alphabet so that he could write down Homeric epics.' P comes along and points out that there could only be two reasons to write something down: (1) you don't already know it and/or (2) to transmit it to other people. But P says t...

Re: Q12 - For years scientists have been

Hi - I'll take a shot. (C) is clearly correct because the author twice basically says so: "there is no reason to think that these scientists will be any more successful in the future" no matter how much they spend and "the dream...is destined to remain a dream." (D) on the other ...

Q2 - Denise: Crime will be reduced

Why is the answer (A) here? It seems that Denise would agree because she thinks criminals 'consider' committing a crime and can 'decide' to not commit one. But it seems like Reshmi would agree as well. Reshmi says that we need to make education more available so that those 'who once viewed criminal ...

Re: Q14 - The allowable blood alcohol level

Hi Matt - Thanks for your response. My question revolves around whether we can assume that social drinkers never get drunk. Miguel surely disagrees with Steven's notion that someone with a .041 BAC is as dangerous as someone with .081 BAC. But I see no reason from the way the answer choice is worded...

Re: Q24 - 25 Sculpture and art

Hi Mike - I'm having trouble with your explanation, mostly because I had the exact same thought process on a similar question (PT 36 sec 1 q 18), which similarly asked an 'assumed' question, also included the caveat in the stimulas of 'if the evidence is correct' but whose correct answer was analogo...

Re: Q14 - The allowable blood alcohol level

Hi - I've got a question about the wording of answer (A). I think the assumption the writers made with the answer choice was to say that "social drinkers, on a night they drank only socially (that is, limitedly), and then drove, pose a threat..." But that is not what the answer states. It ...
