Re: Q19 - Forester: The great majority of

For (A) I've come round to understand it this way: World's forests --(most)--> Fragmented / Sickly --> All species survive --> Regular intervention Negated: No regular intervention --> Not all species survive in fragmented/sickly forests (AKA most of the World's forests) ----- But I also...

Q14 - Activist: Medical conditions such as cancer and birth

Question Type: Flaw Premise: 1. Cancers/birth defects are incurable --> prevention is the way to stop them. 2. They're linked to pollutants in the water. Conclusion: The only way to reduce significantly their overall incidence is to stop industries known to produce these pollutants. The notable ...

Re: Q22

I thought (B) may be correct because both passages discuss how progressive taxes affect different groups of taxpayers. Passage A acknowledges that progressive systems "[require] high-income earners to forfeit a bigger share of their incomes in tax than low-income earners have to pay." (Lin...

I was also torn between (D) and (E). Would it be possible to get an explanation that's a little more in-depth between the two?

Thank you!

Re: Q17 - Han purple

I agree with the above reasoning for (A) : "(A) strengthens the argument by indicating that the conclusion is possible. China covers a lot of land. If the purple pigment and white glass were made in totally different places, then it would be impossible for the pigment to come out of glass produ...

Re: Q17

(Also missed this first time through) On review, I agree that there's a clear reason to eliminate the others, and I think the key to (D) is: " suggesting that a view can have unreasonable consequences." Passage A doesn't commit to there being unreasonable consequences, it just alludes that...

Re: Q5 - A recent study showed that

Another thought on (A) (not to beat a dead horse here): 1. Even skipping the assumptions between "coffee" and "beverage" and "damage to connective tissue" and "exercise", and even if it was true that those who [exercise regularly] are more likely to [drink dec...

Re: Q19 - In an experiment, researchers played

I also missed this by picking (A) with similar reasoning to what's been stated beforehand (I didn't like the gap between "babies" and "humans"). I think another way to understand eliminating (A) is as follows: For me, it comes down to sample size. I thought (A) strengthened the a...

Re: Q18 - There is evidence to suggest

I would also appreciate further explanation for (D) for many of the same reasons: how do we know the flints in D are the polished flints, why does polishing them for chores make it less likely they're for aesthetic purposes (seems almost analogous for over-polishing them for hunting...), etc. Thank ...

Q19

Selected (B) instead of (E).

Could someone please explain why the first paragraph is identifying the basis of his conception instead of conveying the details of it?

I think a simplified example of conveying the details vs. identifying the basis of an argument might be helpful.

Thank you!

Re: Q7

Hello, I picked (B) originally based on lines 20 - 23: "These subjects -- loss, the passage of time, desire -- are timeless , available to readers of any age, gender, or social background ." I see where later (at lines 56) the author writes: "literature, she maintains, is inescapably ...

Re: Q22 - In a study, one group

This question got me too (chose (B) ), but here's how I convinced myself of (A) in a way that hasn't been mentioned (I don't think). (B) is a type of answer choice I call "the anomaly". It goes like this: "Eating snickers is bad for you." " Some people eat snickers and live ...

Re: Q27

I picked (A) because of lines (12 - 17). "As members of a group feel more accepted by the others, they acquire greater freedom to say what they really think, becoming less likely to use deceitful arguments or to play it safe by dancing around the issues with vapid or conventional comments."...

Hey all, Two questions: 1. I picked (E) on both my original test and on blind review. I thought the theory B outlined was found in lines 42-44 and 57 - 59: "Perhaps the currently fashionable call for attention to narrative in legal education could have an effect on this." and "Still, ...

Re: Q19 - It takes 365.25 days

I had a really difficult time with this question too. I found a good explanation here: http://dl.keywin.org/6/5/65c396393e0ee3bb08d7ec258e17d971.pdf But to paraphrase: The stem is confusing, but the only thing that's changing is how we label the last day of the year. 364 normal, standardized days, a...

Q17

Just wanted to make sure I was on track for this and hopefully have someone clarify why (E) is incorrect. I would assume it's because: 1. The author isn't refuting claims, the author is describing Meyerson's arguments refuting these claims. So "description" rather than "refute" i...

Re: Q16 - Comets do not give

I too had a hard time understanding this problem in terms of numbers, but here's a way of thinking about the problem that helped me (although it's kind of silly). Let's say the majority of comets are made of glass (a highly reflective surface). So one scientist sees Halley's comet and notices "...

Re: Q15 - Doctor: It is wrong for medical

Hey, thank you so much for your help on this question. I just wanted to get some feedback on why I picked (B) initially and where I went wrong in my reasoning. Conclusion: Even if companies want the research confidential, it is wrong to do so. Why? Premise: Because it might cause human suffering (by...
