Q1

by AnnaC659 Sat May 05, 2018 7:59 am

Hi there,

Can someone explain to me why A is the answer??
I was choosing between (C) and (E) and I'm surprised to see that (A) is the correct answer - really quite confused now.
I thought since N couldn't be placed in the front row at all, it cannot be assigned seat 2.

I must have misunderstood the stimulus/rules because I got almost all of the questions wrong. I'm playing it again but still cannot figure them out. If you could elaborate on all of the questions here, I would really really appreciate it.

Here's my diagram (I tried to make it look closest to how i drew it on paper):

f ___ ___ ___ N(strikethrough)
1 2 3
m ___ ___ ___
4 5 6
l ___ ___ ___ O (in this row) P (strikethrough), R (strikethrough)
7 8 9

/ P R (in a box, R and / can switch places),

R
N (to express they are in rows immediately behind/front)

SN (in a box able to switch position, crossed out), UN (in a box able to switch position, crossed out)

Help! Thank you in advance!

We can't go through all the questions in a thread about Q1, but check out the diagram thread to see about setting the game up / interpreting the rules (https://www.manhattanprep.com/lsat/foru ... t1444.html) and then check the existing threads and post a new question or post a follow-up question for any you need more guidance on.

I'm not sure why you thought N couldn't go in the front row. I think you're getting stuff wrong by inverting the meaning of behind and in front.

N can't go in the last row, because the 3rd rule says that R is sitting in the row behind N.

Picture being on a plane/bus/train. If you're in the last row, there IS no row behind you.

From that rule, we would know that the NR chunk will either occupy 1/4, 2/5, 3/6, 4/7, 5/8, or 6/9.

But when we add in the 2nd rule, we know that P will be in a middle seat and R will be in a window or aisle seat.

We need to have a row that looks like R P __ or like __ P R

Since R is stuck in a window or aisle seat, the NR chunk could only be 1/4, 3/6, 4/7, or 6/9.

However, we know that O is in the last row, so O in the last row will not let us do R P __ or __ P R in the last row.

That means that we'll have to do R P _ or _ P R in the middle row.

So the placement of the NR chunk really has to be 1/4 or 3/6.

N _ _
R P _
(_ O _)

or

_ _ N
_ P R
(_ O _)

The only rule we haven't addressed is rule 4, which tells us that neither S nor U can ever be in seat 2.

Thus, when we get to Q1, we can start by thinking
"The first name in each answer choice CANNOT be S or U, since they can't ever be in seat 2".

Eliminate (E).

We can think that N/P/R cannot show up in any valid answer, since we know they're locked into 1/4/5 or 3/5/6.

Eliminate (A), (C), (D).

We're left with (B), so we'll pick it.

Hope this helps.

But the answer is A? which is confusing because N can't be on 2 because R can't be on 5?

I think the source of confusion here might be about the fourth rule in this game: "Rosen's seat is in the row immediately behind the row in which Norris' seat is located." R has to be in the row behind N, but doesn't have to be in the seat directly behind N.

The earlier post was correct in saying that R is restricted to either seat 4 or seat 6, but N could--in theory--be in any of the seats in the first row: 1, 2, or 3. (In practice there are times that N cannot be in seat 2, for example if either S or U are in the first row. But there are other times that N in 2 could work).

Looking at answer choice A, with N in 2 and S in 8, we could have:

T N __
__ P R
O S U

That configuration follows all the rules: N is in the row in front of R, P is next to both R and an empty seat, O is in the last row, and neither S nor U is next to N.

Hope this helps!
