(C): Correct Answer - Didn't select this on the first round, because the philosophical and aesthetic disagreements put me off. They seemed to be words that I hadn't seen in the passage, although they seem to refer to the fact that there were diverse views and interests of the African community that led to cultural debates and diverse preferences for different types of dramas.

(D): Out of scope - The passage does not talk about African American theater artists working today.

(E): Detail Creep - There were diverse preferences for dramas, meaning that there were some who liked urban realistic dramas and some who liked folk dramas. The passage does not mention which one was more popular.

Let me add a couple thoughts:
BEWARE of "unknown comparisons".

(B) "more polarized"
(D) "equaled if not surpassed"
(E) "more popular"

For the correct answer, you mused that these were words you hadn't quite seen in the passage.

That's how pretty much every correct answer will be written, for questions with stems containing these:
inferred
implies
suggests
most likely to agree

We still need to find a line or lines to support our answer, and in this case, lines 42-44 is the closest line to (C).

Philosophical = emphasize differences or fit into mainstream?
Aesthetic = instructor or just entertain?
And then the debate over whether to aim for the black or white part of the audience is kind of a mix of both concerns.
