Q22

22. (D)
Question Type: Identification (20-23)

This fact about current copyright law is mentioned in the second paragraph. If we have a solid understanding of the passage structure, we know where to look.

Incorrect Answers
(A) is a contradictory interpretation. "Completely unrestricted use" is not right. In fact, the passage implies the opposite: current laws prohibit the distribution of unauthorized copies of documents.
(B) is an incorrect interpretation. The passage says that owners of the content control distribution.
(C) is out of scope. Profit is not discussed.
(E) is a contradictory interpretation. The author believes the opposite.

Hey guys, I had a problem with the correct answer choice.

D) says "allow the author" whereas the passage indicates that "owners" have the right to sue a distributor of unauthorized copies.

I feel that in order for D to be right, you have to equate author with owner, which in my opinion is a substantial assumption to make.

Say for instance I hired someone to write me a poem and we had a deal that upon conclusion of the poem, I have full rights to and in all regards, own the poem.

I am not the author, yet I own the poem.

I felt answer choice D) wrongly equates differing terms and that's why I eliminated it upon first glance.

Any thoughts?

I had a problem with D for the same reason but, upon closer reading of the passage, it indicates that A is the owner and the author, according to the telephone analogy where A is the one who left the outgoing message, A is the author as well as the owner, so I think they want us to see the two as interchangeable. So, according to the article, A is both the author and the owner that can distribute and so D would be correct.
