I do not have MGMAT Number Prop Guide. Anyway, I hope the following explanation would be reasonable. |x-4| means two cases: +(x-4) and -(x-4) i) (x-4) = 4-x, solve for x, and you will get x = 4 ii) -(x-4) = 4-x. If you bring the x terms to one side and '4's on other side, you will end up in -x+x = 4...
