I agree - Neither statement 1 or 2 is sufficent by itself.

(2) (x+2)^2 = 169 => x = 11 or -15

so I per my analysis answer should be (C) and 1+2 suffice the requirement.

1 is not sufficient as the only possible values for that equation is x = 0 => y = 0 or x =1 => y = 1 and it's already stated that x is NOT equal to y 2. x^3 = 8 => x = 2 if y^2 = x and if you know x, you cannot determine y as you don't know the sign of y. Here is the case is different. Reme...
