Re: Exponents..

Hi! This problem took me a while to work through and I know there must be a quicker way to solve it. Any suggestions on would be much appreciated! [(8^2)(3^3)(2^4)]/(96^2) = A. 3 B. 6 C. 9 D. 12 E. 18 the answer is A We can think this as (2^6 * 3^3* 2^4)/(2^10*3^2)....... hence on deduction we have...

[quote="Capthan"]The question says 'Each of the numbers w,x,y and z is equal to either 0 or 1'.!!![/quote Correct. This means that all the variables might be 0, or they might all be 1, or some might be 1 and some might be 0. Any combination is acceptable according to the setup in the quest...

Right. As the last poster said, we can deduce from statement 1 that C is halfway between A and B. But we cannot tell D is closer to A or closer to B. With statement 1, we've got 4 possible layouts (not quite drawn to scale, but almost): (1) A --------------------------- B ---------------C-----------...

Hi Helios,

Please post the Manhattan GMAT explanation or a summary of it, so we can be sure that when we answer here in the forum we will not give the same explanation

There seem to be two issues being discussed in this thread. One issue is whether (x+7)/9 can yield an integer if x is negative. As one poster pointed out, yes it can. The second question is whether the premises of the problem allow x to be negative. They do not. We are told that a and b are the digi...

Please see Emily's response above. The question should really say that a is nonzero and we will try to get this updated. The usage of -a in statement 1 does not tell you definitively that a is non-zero. We we know that the line passes through 0,0. IF we also knew that a = 0, then the line would pass...

Shaj, It's good to be skeptical! But I have been teaching GMAT for ~14 years and feel pretty confident on this one. That said, if this problem came up on the real exam they probably would have stated that X was positive to avoid any potential ambiguity. Let me demonstrate why negative digits are a p...

Hi, does "become" itself convey the sense/meaning of "future" and so "will" in E is unnecessary? Thanks in advance. You are right that "will" is unnecessary in E. But I would give a slightly different explanation: You could either say "... make it any mo...

Hi Stacey, If C could read "more than ten times as much energy is generated now... as (energy) was generated in 1990", why couldn't B? more than ten times as much energy is generated now... as it(energy) was (generated) in 1990. I believe that I have seen some OG questions omitted the pas...

'it' could refer to either 'growth' or 'global economy'? Thanks.

Yes, correct. That is *another* reason to eliminate D, E (in addition to those discussed above). Nicely done.

Re: Passive?

Is choice D correct because it uses Passive voice? Thanks That is one reason. Another is the "and merges" instead of "merging". The problem is that the "and merges" makes it sound like nuclear fusion is doing two different things: it powers stuff and it merges atoms. B...

Tha answer is A because the comparison is correct in a and b.So eliminate c,d,e.Moreover "their"is ambiguous in b.Hence go with a. Nice work, Suyash. In addition, "do not grow" in A is better than "without growing" in B. But the key idea, as noted above, is that C D an...
