SC: Simply because they are genetically engineered does n

by cesar.rodriguez.blanco Fri Aug 21, 2009 10:19 pm

I do not know how to discard wrong answers. I picked B, but it is wrong. OA is D, altough GMAT does not like being.
Moreover, I do not understand the meaning "any more likely". Cold we say "more likely" instead?

Simply because they are genetically engineered does not make it any
more likely for plants to
become an invasive or persistent weed according to a
decade-long study published in the journal Nature.
A. because they are genetically engineered does not make it any more likely for plants
to
B. because it is genetically engineered does not make a plant any more likely to
C. being genetically engineered does not make it any more likely that plants will
D. being genetically engineered does not make a plant any more likely to
E. being genetically engineered does not make a plant any more likely that it will
become

Its true that GMAT does not like 'being' but only when its unnecessary.
As a thumb rule, try removing the word 'being', if the sentence still makes sense, then only being is redundant.

B is wrong because the pronoun 'it' precedes the noun plant. ( actually i just read B and felt it was incorrect. I wrote this explanation just for your benefit, so could be wrong :) )
